I read an argument the other day when a friend of mine quoted an intro to a song, “We can’t have world peace until three people can simultaneously look each other in the eye”. There was plea for understanding and peace, and another individual responded with a bleak “might makes right” attitude, accepting the notion that all peaceful societies have been conquered and that fear is an evolutionary response. When you think in such a primitive and animalistic way, as man being on top of the pyramid and as our human condition being inherently evil, then you jeopardize your own humanity. In a fundamental, Darwinistic manner, yes, fear is an evolutionary response that has been developed for survival. However, human beings are social creatures and things are more complex than that. We are the rational animals who act not just on instinct, but reason. We need to sacrifice certain individual rights for the rights of the whole. Who wants to live in constant fear? I would rather fight that fear with love. If you believe in the ideology of peace then more peace will manifest. If you live by the sword, you will surely die by it.
